Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Managers (“PRIM”) is an infrastructure investment management company, founded in 2012, and jointly owned by the PRIM management team, JSE-listed Remgro Limited and Phuthuma Nhleko.

 

PRIM has an experienced management team that, collectively, has more than 150 years of global infrastructure investment experience and broader investment experience in Africa. PRIM has offices in Johannesburg and Stellenbosch, South Africa, with an office in East Africa to be opened shortly.

Our Investment Strategy 

PRIM’s investment strategy to to make equity, quasi-equity and equity-related investments in both greenfield and brownfield infrastructure transactions, as well as companies operating in the infrastructure sector in Africa.

 

PRIM’s mandate covers the whole of Africa, with a strong focus on sub-Saharan Africa. The key areas for investment are in energy transition, digital infrastructure and transportation & logistics. There is also an increased focus on emerging infrastructure sectors such as waste-to-value, grid balancing and infra-technology.

Our Funds

PRIM has two funds, Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund I ("PRIF I"), and Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund II ("PRIF II").

Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund I (“PRIF I"), PRIM’s maiden USD302m African infrastructure opportunities fund, closed in 2016 and is fully committed to 11 investments. PRIF I has already achieved three exits at attractive returns to its investors and PRIF I’s success is furthermore evident by it having already returned USD258m (85% of the total fund size) to its investors after the third exit.

PRIM’s second fund PRIF II attracted total commitments of USD355 million and achieved a final close in November 2024.  It has already made a first investment in the digital infrastructure sector. PRIF II will continue implementing its investment strategy following successes in PRIF I.

ESG and Impact

With deep rooted ESG credentials, PRIM seeks to make investments that are sustainable from both a financial and non-financial perspective. Although not formally established as an ‘Impact’ fund, PRIM’s investment activities will by their nature deliver notable and measurable outcomes that will have an impact on the wellbeing of the societies in which its investments are situated. It furthermore seeks to achieve specific gender and climate targets.
